New lighting changes a room more than almost anything else — but only once it's actually up. Swapping a fixture on an existing, suitable box is a clean install, done level, secure and tested. Where it crosses into wiring changes, an electrician takes over.

Replacing a fixture on an existing, suitable box is handyman work. New circuits, adding boxes, moving wiring, recessed-can retrofits and anything requiring a permit are referred to a licensed electrician.
Common questions
Can you install a heavy chandelier?
If the existing box is rated for the weight, yes. If it isn't, a fixture-rated box or brace is needed first — which may involve an electrician depending on access.
What if there's no existing light where I want one?
Adding a brand-new fixture location means new wiring and a box, which is licensed electrical work. We'll point you to the right trade for that part.
